  “I also know that Millicent tends to exaggerate.” Trent pulled her into his arms. She melted into his warmth, feeling safe and protected. “What is this about prom dates?” he asked, his lips brushing the side of her head.

  Holly thought about all of Millicent’s lies, suggesting that she and Trent were a done deal. She’d made it appear to Holly that Trent had moved on, and Holly had fallen for it. And prom dates? Holly didn’t want to know. Who cared? That was history.

  “I don’t want to know.” She kissed his cheek. “It doesn’t matter.”

  He found her mouth and kissed her, pulling her closer. She kissed him back, deepening it, tossing aside her doubts, her fears, and the past couple days. Minutes later, he broke it off. He traced his finger across her mouth.

  “Now, what is this about your past? Is there something I need to know?” he asked softly.

  “Oh. I was hoping you’d forget about that.”

  “Not a chance.” He smiled. “I’m a cop.”

  “Well...” She didn’t quite know where to begin.

  “You know what? I can tell this makes you uncomfortable. As long as you’re not running from the law, you don’t have to tell me until you’re ready. We’re all allowed our secrets.”

  Holly’s feelings for Trent surged. It was everything she needed to hear. “Just kiss me again, Officer Trinket.”

  And he did.
